There are certain things that are a given when you enter and fall in love with the CrossFit World.  You will learn a new workout language, Wod, Amrap, and Emom become part of your vocabulary. You find yourself needing non slip hair bands, lifting shoes, t shirts with “snatch” humor and unicorns…And eventually you will look at your hands and think “who’s hands are these”? Search on social media under #CrossFithands and there are, hundreds of pictures of ripped and callused hands.  The calluses and tears are signs of hard work and that is something to be proud of, however, not knowing how to care for your “CrossFit hands” properly can turn into a vicious rip-heal-rip cycle that becomes an annoying, on-going WOD interrupting problem.

This is where good, educated coaches and box owners come in.  Lets face it, if you Coach then you are a mentor. Every Box owner and Mentor should make it a point to become educated on how to care for CrossFit hands. There are numerous on –line articles written to help educate. Coaches should take the time to research a few and be prepared to teach. When a member walks up with a ripped palm and asks “What should I do”?  all coaches should be able to walk them through a hand care regime. The key is treating and staying on top of your calluses before they rip and when they rip (because ripping is inevitable as you progress in the sport) treat them like an injury.  The skin should be cut back, the wound should be treated with a product that soothes and helps the healing process and when it heals the calluses need to be taken down with a pumice or razor.  Using a product nightly also helps prep hands for the hard work and beating they take during workouts like Fran, Helen, or Eva.  Many CrossFit athletes think that having “jacked-up hands” is just a part of CrossFit. They make a big mistake by not adding hand care to their recovery program.

The importance of teaching hand care should become as important as teaching mobility.  Keeping a hand care product on site also helps.  Box owners that carry and sell product in their box should shelf a hand rip solution that their members can purchase on site. There are products with wholesale programs set up specifically for affiliate owners which makes it easy to have a solution on HAND….Pun Intended.
